| Confucius Tomb |

Confucius tomb is the graveyard of Confuciuszi and his family covering
an area of 3000 mu encircled by walls with a lot of ancient trees
inside.
As a world cultural heritage in China, the "Three Confucius"
(Confucius Mansion, Confucius Temple and Confucius tomb) is well
known inside and outside of China. With the transferring of management,
"Three Confucius" site was under the management of touring
company last year. Due to the lack of protection consciousness and
poor management, many damages have resulted.
At afternoon of Nor. 22, 2000, Pangbin, an employee of the security
section of Confuciuszi international touring company in Qufu drove
a car and bumped the stele of "Yucishangxiangdianji" into
6 parts and several crumbles resulting a great lose of our country.
This accident disclosed many problems in the security management.
Pangbin (at present, he has been arrested), the directly liable
person, is a security staff. He should be familiar with the rule
of protection, but the lack of protection intention made him drive
into scenic spot without permission resulting in damages of the
ancient stele; some individuals lack of relics risk intention and
have poor responsibility. Thereby there was no one holding Pangbin
back. In addition, the Confuciuszi international touring company,
as the direct manager, had not put into full practice the "responsibility
book of relics security" and had not take much efforts to deal
with the hidden troubles in all aspects of the security of cultural
relics. On top of this accident, in December, when the Confuciuszi
international touring company was doing some cleaning, they destroyed
the paintings on the surfaces of buildings and some of other cultural
relics. In this scenic spot, many ancient buildings have a loss
of painting. It is most serious in Confucius Temple. In many places,
they wash the buildings directly with water resulting the slur of
painting on building surface. Some witnesses said that many pieces
of painting fell off in the cleaning. The problem is serious in
Dazhong Door, Tongwen door, two side doors of Kuiwen Cabinet, east
and west yard, Dacheng Palace, etc.
In addition, the washing with water produces a problem of water
penetration, which makes the lacquer layer arching. According to
the staffs wording in the displaying room, some water pipes are
equipped to wash Confucius Temple. This proves that they wash the
buildings by means of spraying water on purpose. When they wash
the stone steles with water, the water will be left. If the water
penetration happens, when the water freezes, that will make the
stone steles break. After the accident happened, the local management
departments mailed a letter to forbid the use of water spraying.
But the inspect staffs found that happened again in 13 stele pavilions
on Dec. 12. They stopped these actions at once.
In addition, the humidity, a great threat to the displaying cultural
relics, increases due to a large volume of water used in cleaning.
Lots of lodgment of water was found when moving the culture relics.
According to the inspection results, most of cultural relics have
been washed by water. The lodgment of water remained when the inspection
took place in Dec. 19.
The damages resulting from the cleaning is striking. The hidden
threat is beyond assessment. A senior cadre, at the sight of fall-off
of paintings on the surface of buildings, was very angry and said:
"they are destroying the cultural relics, they are destroying
the history". Lots of colored drawings lost their former appearance.
It is known that the State Cultural Relics Department has sent
out an inspection group. They will take a full inspection to this
accident. |
