From lunar 1st August, old Beijing handicrafts of "Grandpa
Rabbits" are seen for sale either in the expensive shops or
in the street-corner shops or at the temple fairs. In Beijing, these
small articles are called "Grandpa Rabbits" while in Tianjin
they are called "Second Grandpa Rabbits". The folk handicrafts
are made out of yellow dirt with a plaster cast. They are integrative
idols of Gods, human beings and beasts. The earliest Beijing "Grandpa
Rabbits" were after the images of the rabbits in the moon.
Some rabbits were with human faces, others were like puppets having
threads under their arms. The arms moved up and down when the threads
were pulled, like they were pounding medicine. Now "Grandpa
Rabbits" has become a lucky symbol, vary in shape. Interestingly
enough, idols "Grandpa Rabbits and Grandma Rabbits" look
like beloved old couples, appearing in front of the customers. If
you search the markets carefully, you are sure to find their "Grandson
Rabbits" and "Granddaughter Rabbits".
